David goes on the run after killing a guard during a botched robbery, leaving his devoted wife in the care of the obsessive Karl. The couple turn to David's friend (and fence for stolen goods), Karl Gault (Barry Morse), who is secretly in love with Marie and decides to set up her new husband for a fall. The clearly infatuated David impetuously decides to marry the lovely Marie, but winds up being cut off by his unperturbed mother. Robert Redford stars as David Chesterman, a compulsive thief whose wealthy mother catches him flirting with their French maid, Marie Petit (Zohra Lampert), who is unceremoniously dismissed on the spot.

The host reveals he’s not dead and had concocted the whole charade with the help of Lt Cavanaugh, who’s not a policeman but a second-rate actor, whereupon the wife reveals that she is having an affair with the second-rate actor and intends to murder her husband after all. Now this is the point at which your head will start spinning, so I suggest you sit down. He even has the VHS tape to prove that she is the “Duchess of Desire”. Lt Cavanaugh believes she is being blackmailed to stay with her cruel husband on the threat of exposing her role in a salacious movie.
